Cyprus has seven official wine routes, each combining vineyards with villages, museums, old wine presses and local wineries. A late-summer visit can be rewarding, but it works best as a small, carefully planned day rather than an attempt to cover the whole island. The official Visit Cyprus wine-routes guide is a useful starting point for choosing one compact area.
Choose one route and confirm the stops. Opening days, tour times and tasting arrangements differ between wineries, especially outside the busiest weeks. Contact each venue before travelling, ask whether a reservation is needed and leave enough time for mountain roads. The official tourism information also advises visitors to check winery opening times in advance.
Check the heat before setting out. Conditions can be very different between the coast, inland valleys and higher villages. Review the latest official forecast and heat warnings on the morning of the trip. Cyprus Ministry of Health guidance recommends avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, drinking water regularly and limiting alcohol in high temperatures. The full current advice is available on the Gov.cy heat-safety page.
Pack for the route, not only the tasting room. Take water for every passenger, a hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and a charged phone. Keep the route map available offline because reception may be uneven in rural areas. A light snack and a small insulated bag are useful, and bottles should not be left for hours in a hot parked car.
Decide who is driving before the first stop. The driver should not drink. If everyone wants to taste, arrange a taxi, licensed transfer or other alternative before leaving. The official information on the EU road-rules page for Cyprus, supplied by the national authorities, lists the applicable alcohol limits and confirms that traffic drives on the left.
Before leaving, check:
- one route and a realistic number of stops;
- confirmed winery opening times or reservations;
- the latest official forecast and heat warning;
- water, shade, suitable shoes and a charged phone;
- a designated driver or pre-booked alternative transport;
- a cool, shaded place for any bottles bought during the day.
Starting early, allowing generous travel time and keeping the plan flexible makes the route safer and more enjoyable. If an official heat warning is severe, move the visit to another day rather than squeezing it into the hottest hours.
